Steps to check quadrooter vulnerability in android devices

In the article , we have seen how an attacker can gain root level access to android devices by exploiting QuadRooter vulnerability.
Many Qualcomm based Android devices are affected by QuardRooter Vulnerability. We can check if our device is affected or not by following these simple steps:
  • Download and install the QuardRooter scanner app developed by Check Point Labs from google play store.
  • Open the app and select “Tap to Scan” button.
  • Application will scan your device for the vulnerabilities
  • It will show the vulnerabilities present in your device if they exist or else your device is safe.

What is the solution?

As these vulnerabilities come pre-installed in the Qualcomm chipsets, security patches are required to resolve the issue and Qualcomm has provided the patches for these vulnerabilities to customers and partners between April and July 2016.
According to Google, security patch update for CVE-2016-2059, CVE-2016-2504 and CVE-2016-2503 has been released and will be rolling out the security patch for CVE-2016-5340 in the upcoming release.
In the meantime, mobile phone manufacturers can get the patch fixed directly from Qualcomm and roll out an update to their devices.

As an end user, we need to wait for the patch update from the mobile phone manufacturers but we can follow these below best practices to keep our devices safe from cyber-attacks:

  • Download and update the latest updates as soon they are released and available.
  • Avoid downloading apps from the 3rd party or untrusted sources.
  • Carefully check the permission requests before installing an application.
  • Use known or trusted Wi-Fi networks; use verified networks provided by trusted sources.
  • Have a mobile security solution that detects suspicious behavior or malware in installed apps.
