Block Chain and Its Meaning for Data Privacy

Block Chain and Its Meaning for Data Privacy

As digital re-imagination starts spreading its wings, there seems to be a healthy tussle between innovation and protection of individual’s right to privacy. One of the many exciting frontiers in technology today is that of the block chain. The technology originally started as part of Bitcoin - an electronic payment system, invented by an unknown individual or group. The technology’s inherent security controls and the ability to record virtually any kind of transactions has however now interested many industries in turning their focus in to the technology. It can be argued that financial institutions are currently the front runners in trying to adopt blockchain technology. Multiple banks are trying to adopt block chain.

Business value creation is a function of regulatory compliance

Business value creation is a function of regulatory compliance
Europen Union  and United States of America, both have been front runners in enhancing and enforcing privacy regulations across different industries. The focus has been to ensure that firstly there is sufficient notice to and adequate consent from customers[1] before personal data is processed. Secondly, personal data is processed with adequate security measures, and finally that personal data is disposed off securely once the purpose for which the personal data was acquired, has been fulfilled.
The incentives for regulation compliance has been increasing gradually across globe. With GDPR put forth formally, any organization with EU interest has a regulatory risk of higher of 4% of global revenue and 20 million euros. This takes data regulatory risk straight in to the board room.

How safe and worth is to reveal your identity data?

How safe and worth is to reveal your identity data?

Quite a while ago, I received a call from a reputed bank’s customer representative about offering me the extended credit limit for credit card. In lieu of that, the bank executive wanted to know some of my personal identity data like- Card number, DOB, or Mother’s maiden name etc.

I refused to give card number and DOB as this was the unique and crucial piece of information which could result into serious data breaches of my banking account (As I have been hearing already a lot on such mobile frauds). Although, the customer representative kept me assuring that this is not a fake call and all this information is being enquired to vouch my identity as part of their verification process.

Dictation - that may put you in jeopardy

Dictation - that may put you in jeopardy

Most of us are aware of the use of the applications that offers voice dictation feature. If we talk to the IOS or Android application that has the dictation feature, it will convert your voice/words to text. This will help us to create larger documents without awkwardly typing out the words on the on-display keyboard. We can talk to the application while driving. My friend who writes stories used to tell me that, all good imaginations or ideas come to him while driving. So he uses an application to talk while driving and the application converts his voice to text and later he posts those in his blog. One time when he was travelling towards a hill station, my friend had a tough time, even though good sceneries had given him lot of threads for writing stories, but he was not able type those because mobile network/internet coverage was not available over there for the voice dictation software he was using.  :-)

Fight with Terrorism vs Data Privacy

Fight with Terrorism vs Data Privacy
An hour back I was reading an article on an online news site about the tussle going on between the US companies like Apple, Google and the US government on the issue of 'use of encryption'. And this tussle is going on for almost a year now. The US agency FBI is criticizing Apple because it is unable to read iPhone users’ messages after Justice Department obtains iMessage ruling. FBI has been asking the tech. giant to stop providing encryption to its customers.
